In a simple ceremony at the Office of the President today, Her Excellency Christine Carla Kangaloo O.R.T.T., President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, presented Mrs. Lynette Seebaran-Suite, Attorney at law with the instrument appointing her Senior Counsel.
Mrs. Seebaran-Suite S.C. was accompanied by her husband Professor Emeritus Winston Suite.
Mrs. Lynette Seebaran-Suite SC has been an Attorney at law for more than forty years. Having attained a Bachelor of Laws degree with First Class Honours at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, she then attended the Hugh Wooding Law School and was called to the Bar in 1977.
After a short stint at the Law Reform Commission, she entered private practice in 1980 at the newly-established Chambers of Martin Daly and Michael de la Bastide. She deliberately chose a practice in family law and has been an activist and a champion for women’s rights in the nation and region including issues such as domestic violence, sexual offences and sexual harassment in the workplace.
Apart from her work on behalf of women for which she received a National Award for Women in Development, (Gold), in 2012, she has advocated on behalf of groups such as land tenants, trade unions, credit unions and various community and service organisations.
Mrs. Seebaran-Suite SC has served on a number of Boards and Statutory Authorities including the Port Authority, the Trinidad Publishing Company, the Law Reform Commission, the Legal Aid and Advisory Authority, the National Commission on the Status of Women and the Trinidad and Tobago Medical Council. Since 1992, she has been the head of the law firm of Lynette Seebaran & Company.
For her role as an advocate and public educator in gender and human rights for vulnerable groups, Mrs. Seebaran-Suite was awarded an Honourary Doctor of Laws by the University of the West Indies in November 2021.
In congratulating Mrs. Seebaran-Suite SC on her appointment, Her Excellency referred to remarks she had made during last Monday’s ceremony about the responsibility of Senior Counsel to mentor younger members of the bar. Her Excellency pointed out that there was no need to remind Mrs. Seebaran-Suite SC of such an obligation as that has been Mrs. Seebaran-Suite’s modus operandi throughout her distinguished legal career. Her Excellency also commiserated with Mrs. Seebaran-Suite SC on the recent loss of her mother.
