Media Launch of the National Junior Extempo Monarch Competition – 2016

His Excellency Anthony Thomas Aquinas Carmona ORTT, SC attended the Media Launch of the National Junior Extempo Monarch Competition at the Police Retirees’ Annex, Riverside Complex, Port of Spain. The event was held on January 8, 2016.

President Carmona in his remarks stated that the aim of the event “Promoting Develop Sustenance of all Aspects of Arts and Culture,” through a huge undertaking, is critical for the survival of some of our cultural products.  It is no secret that the art of Extempo has been threatened by extinction due to lack of interest from many quarters and the existence of the generational gap in the art form.

His Excellency congratulated the Friends of the Youths Committee for embarking on an initiative to develop and revive the art form by way of investing in the youth.  He further stated that their work will ensure the creation of lines of succession in the Arts and the trans-generational passage of a unique part of what is considered Trinbagonian culture.

We must ensure that our children are aware of every aspect of their cultural heritage and not just what is trending.  There is nowhere in the world, other than Trinidad and Tobago that Extempo is performed.  It is an art found exclusively and solely in Trinidad and Tobago.

The wit, ingenuity and creativity necessary for Extempo are qualities we must all try to inculcate in the minds of our youth.  As a society we must possess an imagination that can boast of originality and unsurpassed creative potential.

President Carmona went on to state that as we celebrate the birth and launch of this brainchild today, I am deeply saddened by the passing of one of our cultural stalwarts, Jit Samaroo HBM, Steel Pan arranger yesterday.  This Pan genius took the Renegades Steel Orchestra to nine National Panorama Championships.  I wish to extend my condolences to his family and the Pan fraternity on the loss of a legend.

He expressed his gratitude to the members of the Media on their presence at the launch and their continued coverage of the Arts and Culture and encouraged their continued support through the use of technology with a worldwide reach to diffuse Extempo and our other indigenous are forms.

His Excellency concluded by thanking the Friends of the Youth Committee for their efforts in the revival of Extempo.
