Diplomatic Dinner


Their Excellencies Anthony Thomas Aquinas Carmona ORTT, SC President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and Mrs Reema Carmona hosted the Annual Dinner in Honour of Diplomatic Missions accredited to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago on November 14, 2015 and Pier 1 Trinidad Limited, Williams Bay Chaguaramas. At the end of the event, French Ambassador, Hedi Picquart, expressed thanks at being present among friends and diplomatic colleagues. However, he was extremely pained by the bombing attacks on his country by ISIS and other Islamic Extremist, just the day before (November 13, 2015), in which over sixty (60) of his countrymen were killed and hundreds more injured. Ambassador Picquart, thanked all who sent words of encouragement and offered support in whatever way. He especially thank President Carmona for the words he sent to French President Francois Hollande.

His Excellency, in his remarks at the event spoke of the continued destruction of families left in the wake of ISIS. He went on to commend the steadfastness of Ambassador Picquart who has endured tremendous challenges during his tenure as a diplomat. President Carmona recounted the Ambassador’s time during his posting inTripoli, Libya (2011-14) where the French Embassy was bombed and his international colleague and diplomat, United States Ambassador to Libya, John Christopher Stevens was murdered. During this time Ambassador Picquart lived in a hotel sometimes sleeping on the floor but he never left his post, because he was needed by French citizens who lived in Libya.

President Carmona concluded by commending all the diplomats on their tireless devotion to duty and the work done behind the scenes as unsung peacemakers whose presence has fostered numerous resolutions to international conflicts. He further expressed heartfelt thanks on behalf of Her Excellency and himself to all for being present to share this time together.
