His Excellency Anthony Thomas Aquinas Carmona, ORTT, SC, President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago received Dr Eugene Holiday, the Governor General of St Maarten on a courtesy call on June 2, 2017.
Accompanying the Governor General were His Excellency Jules Bijl, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Governor General Mr Reinier van Deele, Director of Cabinet and Mr Patrick Trijsburg, Aide de Camp.
In keeping with his initiative since his inauguration, the President had school students present at the event. The student were from Presentation College, San Fernando, Diego Martin Secondary School and Holy Rosary Preparatory School.
President Carmona in speaking about the Governor General sated how enthralled he was to meet someone with such a diverse range of accolades while still in their prime. He further mentioned the Governor’s excellence in executing his financial advisory functions with the Central Bank and diplomatic functions while simultaneously engaged in competitive basketball.
His Excellency went on to speak of one of his true passions that is youth empowerment as a way of creating solutions to the problems affecting our world today. He said “the theory that a leader must also be a pensioner is now debunked, especially with the prevalence of technology in the 21st century. As an indication of this change, he went on to point out the United Kingdom’s inclusion of youth opinion in the Scottish Referendum in making that Referendum available to persons as young as sixteen years of age.
The Governor General in support cited the closely knitted cultural fabric of the European Union as another example of student being encouraged to develop a greater sense of cross-cultural sensitivity in the Caribbean Community (CARCOM) region. In continued support of this he suggested that there be more student exchange programmes and regional scholarships which promote intra-regional and extra-regional cooperation in the Caribbean.
